It’s been three years since the post-election uprising in Iran, and Iranians are still seeking democracy and human rights. More than 20,000 citizens have been arrested for peaceful dissent. Iran ranks first worldwide in per capita executions, and jails the most journalists.
United for Iran has collaborated with musicians from Iran, Egypt, Libya, South Africa, U.S., Palestine, Iraq, Sweden, Japan and more to produce AZADI: Freedom Songs for Iran, a mixtape album mixed and arranged by DJ Child of Project Groundation. The artists have written and contributed songs of resistance and inspiration to create the first ever solidarity collection for the people of Iran.
Many of the artists have direct experience with repression: Libyan Masoud Bwisri, played his guitar for Libyan rebels on the front lines of conflict; Salome MC, Iran’s first female rapper currently cannot return; both Soraya Fallah, a Kurdish activist, and Sofar’s lead singer was imprisoned and tortured in Iran; Bahareh Hedayat is serving 10 years for political activities; and Sarah Shourd, is a former prisoner in Iran.
“In the face of human suffering, art is one of the most effective forms of resistance,” said Soraya Fallah. “Human history shows us the only way to fight injustice is to raise your voice, raise awareness, raise the will to fight and get back what is your right by birth,” said Salome MC.
“This album celebrates the noblest cause, a people’s struggle for freedom,” said Arash Sobhani of the Iranian band Kiosk.

از خيزش مردم ايران در اعتراض به نتايج انتخابات سه سال مي گذرد، و مردم ايران کماکان درپي تحقق مردم سالاري و حقوق بشر هستند. بيش از بيست هزار شهروند به خاطر ابراز مسالمت آميز مخالفت خود بازداشت شده اند. ايران بالاترين سرانه ي اعدام را در جهان داراست و بيش از هر کشور ديگري روزنامه نگاران را زنداني مي کند. و فعالان و اقليت ها با تهديد، بازداشت و زندان مواجه هستند.
اتحاد براي ايران با هنرمنداني از ايران، مصر، ليبي، آفريقاي جنوبي، ايالات متحده، فلسطين، عراق، سوئد، ژاپن و کشورهاي ديگرهمکاري کرده تا آلبوم آزادي: ترانه هاي رهايي براي ايران را تهيه کند. هنرمندان از جمله محسن نامجو، رعنا فرهان (فرحان)، کيوسک، و ايندو، ترانه هايي در ستايش مقاومت ساخته و به اين آلبوم تقديم کرده اند. اين اولين باراست که چنين مجموعه اي در همبستگي با مردم ايران تهيه مي شود.
بسياري از اين هنرمندان تجربه ي شخصي خود از سرکوب را بيان مي کنند: مسعود بوصير ليبيايي در خطوط مقدم نبرد براي شورشيان ليبيايي گيتار مي نواخته است. سالومه اولين خواننده رپ زن در ايران ديگر نمي تواند به ايران بازگردد، ثريا فلاح فعال کرد، وهمچنين خواننده ي اصلي گروه سوفار زنداني و شکنجه شده است، بهاره هدايت، فعال دانشجويي و فعال حقوق زنان، به سبب فعاليت هاي سياسي اش به ده سال زندان محکوم شده و هم اکنون در زندان محبوس است، و سارا شورد سابقا در ايران زنداني سياسي بوده است.
